We all experience that feeling of emptyness from time to time. If we say we are unhappy, it is not. If we say we are sad, it is not. However, there are times when we feel bored and helpless. If you find yourself in this same position, you might be experiencing languishing.
What is languishing, you ask?
We can affirm that this idea entered our lives as a result of the pandemic. It can be described as boredom, aimlessness, or stagnation. Perhaps you are thinking of Burnout syndrome. It’s not the exact same thing. This situation is closer to emptiness and restlessness syndrome.
What is the difference between burnout syndrome and this?
We feel like our energy has been reset when we experience burnout syndrome. Even if it is something we really want, we won’t do it. However, in the case languishing, we are not at zero. While we still have power, our feelings of joy and loss of direction are a result.
These are the most commonly used sentences:
- Unease is a constant feeling in my body. I want something, but I don’t know what it is.
- Although I am not unhappy, I am not happy.
- I feel empty and aimless.
What causes languishing
Uncertainty is the concept that most people have the most trouble with. We can’t avoid the exact situation we fear, and we don’t have any control over it. The The most notable example of uncertainty is the pandemic. Our plans were immediately disrupted as a result of a sudden change in our entire world. We felt trapped by our routines and luxuries.
This is why we felt empty and hopeless. Our dreams were always long-term and we didn’t know at the start of the pandemic if we would ever ‘go back into our old lives again’.
Stagnation, apathy and aimlessness became the norm.
So what do we do?
1. Important point: Keep following the flow.
It is important to focus on the present moment while still enjoying your activities. This could be a hobby. Spending time With loved ones. Go to the theater, dance, or paint. The choice is yours
2. You can set short-term goals, or perform small tasks.
Set yourself easy tasks. If you are always putting off going to the movies or other places that you would like to see, this is a good example. Sometimes it’s as simple as speaking with a friend that you haven’t seen for a while. It will be obvious.
3. Schedule an appointment with you.
This definition is my favorite. What does this mean? You can go on a date with you. Take the opportunity to visit a place you love, or that you just discovered. Discover and enjoy a new beverage you’ve never tried before. If you enjoy outdoor activities, go for a walk in a quiet area—our common goal in all of them: is to take time for ourselves and review our thoughts.
Remember that what you want is as important as what it isn’t. Clarify your expectations. Reorient your life. If none of these seem sufficient, you can always seek expert assistance.
