What is burnout syndrome?

Burnout is the last of the body’s involuntary responses when individuals are stressed. This is the “Alarm Phase”. At this point, the person shakes himself, goes beyond the average resistance level, and goes into the “Resistance Phase”. After this phase continues for a while, which is not normal, it suddenly falls below the average resistance level and regresses to the “Exhaustion Phase”.

This negative situation caused by the changes in working conditions with the Industrial Revolution did not attract the attention of anyone at that time. Although it is seen in service-oriented sectors, professions closer to Burnout Syndrome in this field include those working at the level of Doctor, Nurse, Nurse, Lawyer, Academician, Teacher, Customer Service Representative, Police, and Manager.

Although Burnout Syndrome is closely related to similar concepts such as stress and depression, Burnout Syndrome is a condition that includes all of these. It can have more devastating consequences if it is not noticed and precautions are not taken. Situations where the balance of work and private life cannot be established, wrong decisions are made, and unbalanced energies are the precursor of burnout syndrome; in short, the ambiguity of roles. When you wake up one morning, “I’m exhausted.” Burnout is not a phenomenon, you can say. You must follow the signs.

Physiological, Emotional/Cognitive, and Behavioral Symptoms

Physiological: It starts with a feeling of tiredness/fatigue, headache, drowsiness, sleep disorders, and, if no precautions are taken, recurrent colds, weakening of the immune system, rapid weight loss or rapid weight gain, stomach/intestinal diseases, high blood pressure, muscle conditions such as stress, heart palpitations, cholesterol.

Cognitive: Family problems, depression, psychological disorders, feelings of restlessness and anxiety, feelings of hostility towards other individuals, rush, fear, feeling isolated, helplessness, hopelessness, and guilt. The tendency of the person to quit work, be late for work, or get reports constantly.

Behavioral: Conflicts within the family, desire to be alone, not reacting in situations where one should respond or vice versa, turning to other things instead of being interested in work, increase in work accidents, decrease in self-esteem and self-confidence, the tendency to drugs, alcohol, and tobacco products. Increase in forgetfulness.
